A recommendation from Kelly: radical surfing

From Kelly:

This video excerpt shows a great mix of action and interview edits. Note the way the interviews are filmed: clean lighting but radical cropping and framing of the faces. This is also one of the first videos to use the “3d effect”. Also note the use of sound; just a low, pulsing tone layered under water sounds and interview audio. The filmmaker is Stacy Peralta who started out making skateboard films and has moved on to feature length documentaries. His film Dogtown and Zboys is, in my opinion, one of the best blends of still photography and motion picture I’ve ever seen.

Not only is the video visually compelling, but it’s subject matter is great too. It’s one of those “experts in awe of something they’ve never seen before” stories that I think people find fascinating.

That 3-D effect is pretty cool; a little flashy, but cool. I also like the way the interviews are cropped. Another thing that came to mind is that you have to pick your interview subject carefully. Sure, there are some people that are mandatory for a given story, but the enthusiastic “characters” can really make a piece.
